What’s the best thing about winning ugly?
Winning.
Joost Luiten came nowhere close to dominating at the fourth round of the Wales Open on Sunday, winning the title with a pedestrian 71 in the final round to finish 14-under.
He edged England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Ireland’s Shane Lowry by one stroke each. Of the trio, only Fleetwood made a push on Sunday, firing a 4-under 67 that closed with a five-hole push of four birdies and an eagle moments after a double-bogey 5 on No. 13 seemed to take him out of it.
Luiten started his round with consecutive bogeys, fought back to even after two birdies to star the back nine, but needed a third birdie on 15 to finish the round at even par.
Lowry could not avoid the bogey bug, hitting three of them, and drew within a stroke with a final-hole birdie.
Five other players finished tied fo fourth at 12-under, including Ryder Cup team members Jamie Donaldson and Marc Warren.
