Expert Picks: Wyndham Championship

The 2014 PGA Tour regular season draws to a close this week for the Wyndham Championship in Greensbourgh, North Carolina. Only the top 125 players in the FedEx Cup standings head to the Barclays next week, so for many players in the field this week, it’s a last gasp attempt for qualification. For others like Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson, it’s an opportunity to impress Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, and stake a claim for the one of three Team USA wild card selections.

Webb Simpson is currently ranked 18th in the FedEx Cup rankings going into this week. This is mainly thanks to a win at Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last fall. He added another 6 top 10 finishes to his year, but just missed out on automatic selection for the Ryder Cup and will now have to rely on a captain’s pick. Simpson heads into the week 9th on tour in strokes gained putting and 2nd on longest drive. As a former champion and hometown hero, Simpson heads into the week second favourite at 16/1

Brendon De Jonge has already secured his place in next week’s Playoff event sitting at a comfortable 68th of the FedEx Cup list. It’s been a fairly steady season which has seen him make 2 top 10 finishes and 4 top 25’s. He currently ranks 22nd on tour for driving accuracy, hitting 67% of fairways this season. Although coming of a T4st finish at the PGA Championship, De Jonge will be looking to get back to the upper section of the leaderboard. At 66/ he offers a great price and a legitimate chance to challenge in the weakened PGA Tour field.

Stephen Gallacher doesn’t have status on the PGA Tour, but is in the field this week. Like many American payers in this event, he will be using it to try and gain valuable points towards qualification, but for Europe’s Ryder Cup Team. On the European Tour, Gallacher is ranked 9th of the Race to Dubai with a 6 top 10’s and a victory in the strong fielded Omega Dubai Desert Classic. He has also proved he’s capable at the highest level finishing T15th in the Open. At 80/1 he’s a value bet of the week, to continue the British dominance on the PGA tour in the last few weeks!
