A whopping £5.4 million purse is up for grabs at this year’s Open Championship, up £150k from 2013.
Last year, Phil Mickelson had to walk away with a mere £945k. Whoever takes the Claret Jug this year will enjoy an extra £30k, bringing their total to £975k, or to look at it another way, £13541.67 per hole.
That puts it up there with the biggest purses in the year. With the current exchange rate, only The Players and the PGA Championship trump it, both with a $10m purse (£5.85m at today’s exchange rate).
