2014 US Open: By the Numbers

While the 2014 US Open lacked basically any drama thanks to Martin Kaymer’s dominant performance, it still had plenty of interesting numbers to crunch come the following week. Here are a few to chew on:

8: Number of strokes that Martin Kaymer won the 2014 US Open by. It is the fourth-largest margin in the tournament’s history, with TigerWoods’ 15 stroke margin in 2000 the largest.

65 x 2: Kaymer’s dualing 65s in the first two rounds marked the first time any player has ever opened a Major with consecutive rounds of 65 or better.

$3.42 million: Kaymer has earned this much for his two wins this year – the US Open and the PLAYERS Championship. Only five other players in the world have earned this much in total in 2014.

5: Kaymer is just the fifth player in PGA history to win the US Open, the PGA Championship and the PLAYERS Championship in a career. He joins the elite quartet of Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Jack Nickalus and Tiger Woods.

4: Kaymer’s win was just the fourth Major victory by a Germany player. Kaymer previously won the PGA Championship, and Bernhard Langer won the Masters in 1985 and 1993.

$219,180: The difference in money made by runner-up Erik Compton at the US Open compared to his earnings on tour between 2008 and 2012. Compton picked up a check for $789,330 on Sunday after having totaled $570,150 between 2008 and 2012.
