It’s been a tough year for Tiger Woods – no longer No. 1 in the world, injured to the point of missing the first two Majors of the year, and now this, no longer the top-earning athlete in the world.
Boxer Floyd Mayweather supplanted Woods as the top-earning athlete for 2013, as Woods fell to No. 6 in the rankings, making a “meager” $61.2 million. Of that sum, $55 million came from endorsements, appearance fees and his new business designing golf courses.
Woods was barely even the top earning golfer, finishing just two spots ahead of Phil Mickelson, who tallied $53.2 million – $5.2 million in winnings, $48 million in advertising.
Also making the list of the top 100 were Rory McIlroy at No. 35 with $24.3 million – $20 million of that in endorsements, and $10 million of that from Nike.
Sweden’s Henrik Stenson made the list for the first time thanks to his amazing finish to the 2013 season. Stenson won the PGA’s FedExCup and the Euro Tour’s Race to Dubai titles, to devour $18 million in earns, giving him $21.2 million for the year total, 64th on the list.
The 95th spot on the list went to Australia’s Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters winner. He rolled in $17.7 million – $9 million of that in advertising money.
