It wasn’t pretty, unless you were Ben Crane.
Crane shot a 3-over 73 on Sunday, and hit a two-putt bogey on No. 18, but that was enough to secure a one-stroke victory over Troy Merritt.
The victory was bittersweet for Crane, who missed qualifying for the US Open a few days ago. He ended up playing 30 holes on Sunday, finishing the final 12 of his third round at the rain-soaked Memphis tournament and then firing the fourth round in the afternoon.
Crane did not make a single birdie on the round, but still picked up a check for $1.044 million and 500 FedEx points.
Merritt was 1-over for the day and finished 9-under for the tournament. The real threat to Crane came from Webb Simpson, who rose up to tie for third with a third-round 69 and a fourth-round 66.
Simpson was just 1-under at the turn on Sunday, then birdied 15, 16 and 17 down the stretch to make things interesting.
Phil Mickelson wound up tying for 11th at 6-under. Mickelson finished his third round with a 3-under 67, but was 2-over in the final round.
