Countdown to Fedex Cup Playoffs

There are 12 tournaments remaining on the PGA Tour schedule before the start of the FedExCup playoffs, meaning 30 tournaments are in the books and only about 30% of the season remains for golfers to qualify for the initial field of 125.

While the FedExCup playoffs are technically anyone’s to win, but the more points a golfer goes into it with, the better those odds become.

On Sunday, it was Hideki Matsuyama greatly increasing his odds by winning The Memorial at Muirfield Village, giving himself 500 points in the rankings and launching him from 50th in the overall standings up to 14th.

The Top 5 in the standings remained unchanged this week:

  • Jimmy Walker
  • Bubba Watson
  • Matt Kuchar
  • Dustin Johnson
  • Jordan Spieth

The Memorial runner-up Kevin Na jumped from 20th to 10th with his second-place finish. World No. 1 Adam Scott, who finished tied for fourth on Sunday, is 12th, despite having played just nine tournaments.

Several of the bigger names in golf may be in jeopardy of sliding out of that Top 125 if they don’t pick things up over the next three months.

Defending British Open champion Phil Mickelson is currently 95th, having move up three spots last weekend. He has 381 points. By comparison, leader Walker has 2,239.

Last year’s FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson, slipped six spots from No. 104 to No. 110, missing Muirfield to take part in the Nordea Masters in his home country of Sweden. Stenson is 10th in the Race to Dubai standings. He won that event last year as well.

The injured Tiger Woods, who has played just three events in 2014, is ranked 205th with a meager 43 points.
