Mickelson: “I’ve Done Nothing Wrong”

Phil Mickelson entered The Memorial at Muirfield Village pretty confident on the kinds of questions he’d be facing this week: Why hasn’t he won a tournament yet in 2014? How does he feel with the US Open, his bane last year and in years prior, coming up soon? What’s it like not having his main competitor all these years hurt for an extended period of time?

It’s unlikely he ever thought those questions would involve why exactly the FBI is investigating him.

After shooting a third-round 72, Mickelson addressed news stories that popped up late Friday that the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are investigating financial trades he made with information that might have not been public.

According to a federal official who spoke on the matter, Mickelson and a known Las Vegas gambler named Billy Walters made trades involving Clorox during a time where investor Carl Icahn was attempting a takeover of the company.

When Icahn’s attempt became public, the price of the company’s stock jumped.

Mickelson told reporters that the attention from the FBI, which first approached him after his opening round, has not fazed him.

“It’s not going to change the way I carry myself,” Mickelson siad. “Honestly, I’ve done nothing wrong. I’m not going to walk around any other way.”

True to his word, Mickelson left the interview tent and signed autographs for 20 minutes.
