Colin Montgomerie claimed his maiden major championship with a four stroke victory at the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores, Michigan.
After a glittering career in which he topped the European Order of Merit eight times, Montgomerie claimed the one prize that had so far eluded him, a major championship, after a stunning final round of 65.
The win marks Montgomerie’s first Senior Major in just his fifth attempt after his 13-under par victory total saw off the challenge from a number of golfing greats in the chasing pack. The winning 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain managed to stay clear of this year’s American Ryder Cup Captain, Tom Watson who finished four strokes behind in second place, and fellow senior greats, Bernard Langer and Jay Haas who finished a stroke further back in third place.
This is Montgomerie’s second year as a De Vere Golf Ambassador, a role which sees him represent nine luxurious golfing resorts within the De Vere Hotels & Resorts portfolio, including the stunning surroundings of The Carrick on Loch Lomond, renowned Northumberland tournament venue, Slaley Hall, host of the 2013 ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship, Mottram Hall in Manchester and the spiritual home of the Ryder Cup, The Belfry, which was the setting of many iconic moments during the Scotsman’s regular our career.
Montgomerie is just one of the golfers that De Vere Golf supports, alongside European Tour professional Matthew Baldwin and EuroPro Tour Professional Alex Belt, which serves to underline the brand’s dedication to growing and supporting the game across all levels throughout the UK.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for me. I have come very close to winning Major Championships in the past and it’s great to finally win one, especially considering the incredibly talented players that were in the field this week,” commented Montgomerie.
“I am honoured to represent the De Vere Golf brand, and the De Vere team has been incredibly supportive to me over the past 18 months. Its portfolio of fantastic golfing resorts right across the UK, coupled with the team’s wealth of experience in running professional golf tournaments and corporate events, makes me confident that every visitor to a De Vere resort will have a truly memorable experience.
“I’m fully behind its initiatives to grow the game through investments into Academies, coaching and memberships; and the support it gives to golfing Ambassadors just helps to underline this.”
Keith Pickard, De Vere Group Director of Golf stated his delight at Montgomerie’s victory, “It is great to see Colin succeed on a Major Championship stage. He is certainly one of the greatest players to ever grace the game, and this win is a fantastic addition to his glittering golfing resumé.
“Colin has been a fantastic Ambassador for the De Vere Golf brand and the support that he has received since his victory this weekend just proves that he is still one of the most loved and admired British golfers. Hopefully this is the start of a very successful season for Colin, and everyone here at De Vere wishes him every success.”
To mark Montgomerie’s success and align this with the exceptional membership offerings from De Vere Hotels & Resorts, anyone who signs up to The Country Club, the new premium lifestyle membership, or the pioneering De Vere Club membership before 12th June 2014, will automatically be entered into a prize draw for a selection of signed merchandise by the De Vere Golf Ambassador, and be in with a chance of winning an exclusive lesson from Montgomerie in a special event on the 1st September.
