The doubters wondered if Adam Scott was worthy of the No. 1 ranking.
They doubt no more.
Scott won for the first time since last August’s Barclays, cementing himself in the No. 1 position by edging fellow Major winner Jason Dufner in a playoff at The Colonial in Texas on Sunday.
Last year’s Masters’ champion, Scott fired a 71-68-66-66 – 271, and birdied No. 18 on the third hole of the playoff to edge Dufner, who won last summer’s PGA Championship.
Scott is the first player ever to win all four Texas PGA events in his career. Ben Hogan is the only other player to win at least three.
It was Scott’s second straight 66 and earned him 500 FedEx Cup points, $1.152 million and secured his hold on the No. 1 spot in the world.
He was up and down on the front nine Sunday, recording four birdies in the first six holes, but coming out of the turn just 1-under thanks to a double bogey 6 on No. 9.
He rectified that situation with birdies on 11, 12 and 14.
Dufner fired a 66 of his own on Sunday, as did Nicholas Thompson, who tied for third with Freddie Jacobson. Dufner hit four of his birdies on the first 10 holes, then gave up a stroke on No. 11 before rallying to force the playoff with a birdie on No. 18.
