There’s a reason Thomas Bjorn is leading the Race to Dubai points tally board.
On a rain-soaked Day One of the BMW PGA Championship in Surrey, Bjorn showed why that is.
The Dane fired a course-breaking record 10-under 62, the best round of his career, to open up a two-stroke lead at the end of the tournament’s first day.
Play was suspended at 20:42 local time due to darkness after rain delayed several golfers. Bjorn has a two-stroke lead over Ireland’s Shane Lowry.
Bjorn was just 3-under at the turn, but turned up the heat on the back nine, starting with a birdie, birdie, eagle sequence. He never had a bogey on the day.
Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello is third at 7-under, followed by France’s Gary Stal at 6-under. The PLAYERS champion Martin Kaymer is tied for eighth with Henrik Stenson and Rory McIlroy at 4-under.
Stenson has a chance to take over as the new world No. 1 if he finishes high enough, while McIlroy is showing no ill effects of Wednesday’s announcement that he had broken off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
