Just a few days after sending out wedding invitations, former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy announced on Wednesday that he has broken off his engagement to former world No. 1 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.
“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said in a released statement. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails .I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”
It’s truly tough timing for McIlroy, who will begin play Thursday in the European Tour’s biggest event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey.
“Everyone has been through breakups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult. But look, I’m here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf,” McIlroy said at the pre-tournament press conference Wednesday afternoon.”
The bright spot is that McIlroy, a huge Manchester United soccer fan, will play with three members of the club in Wednesday’s pro-am event.
