Brendon Todd topped the leaderboard through 36 holes of the HP Byron Nelson Classic in Irving, TX, on Friday, but Paul Casey was the name on everyone’s lips by day’s end.
Casey tied the PGA record for lowest score on a back nine, firing an 8-under 27 thanks to six birdies and an eagle. He wound up with a 7-under 63 to vault into second place after struggling to finish above par on Thursday. He’s one of eight players tied at 6-under with 134s, two strokes behind Todd, who shot a gorgeous 64 highlighted by back-to-back birdies at the end. Todd needed just 22 putts to finish his round.
Also checking in at 6-under are The PLAYERS Championship winner Martin Kramer, along with Graham DeLaet, Morgan Hoffman, Marc Leishman, Charles Hovell III and Mike Weir.
First-round leader Peter Hanson followed his first-round 65 with a 3-over 73 and is now tied for 25th at 2-under.
Feel-good story David Duval, who fired a 66 on Day One, dropped back to a 76 on Friday and missed the cut, finishing at 2-over. Defending champion Sang-Moon Bae finished 7-over to miss the cut, but making it was 17-year-old Dallas amateur Scottie Scheffler, who fired a 68 on Friday and is 1-under for the tournament.
