The weather was the big deal for the first three days of the Madeira Islands Open. If only that would have been the case on Sunday.
Ian McGregor, caddie for Alastair Forsyth, died after suffering a heart attack on the ninth hole at the course at Santo da Serra, suspending play until 6 p.m. when the decision came to finish the round and the tournament.
Thus came the bittersweet first tour victory for Daniel Brooks, who struggled to smile in his photo clinching the tournament trophy.
The Englishman defeated Scotland’s Scott Henry on the first hole of a playoff to win the tournament by a stroke.. While it was a happy day for Henry, many golfers were irate that the tour decided to continue the tournament after McGregor’s death, taking to Twitter to blast the decision.
Brooks finished 9-under with a 68-67 – 135. He and Henry finished three strokes better than the four players who tied for third: Spain’s Jordi Garcia Pinto and Antonio Hortal, Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti and France’s Julien Guerrier.
Portgual’s amateur entry, Jose-Fillipe Lima, finished tied for 10th after firing a 4-under 69-71 – 140.
