LA MANGA CLUB PROVIDES ADDED SPARK T0 HELP CHILDREN’S CHARITY

La Manga Club provided the ideal setting for Sparks to launch its series of golf fundraising events in 2014 as a mixture of top sporting celebrities and amateurs headed to the luxury resort for a fun-packed three days which raised £15,000 for the leading children’s medical research charity.

Spain’s flagship resort was again the venue for the popular Sparks La Manga Classic, with the 54-hole Stableford event taking place on La Manga Club’s renowned North and South courses.

Heading the list of veteran sporting stars taking part was Scotland assistant manager Mark McGhee; Allan Wells, winner of the 100 metres gold medal in 1980; former Wimbledon, Chelsea and England goalkeeper Dave Beasant and ex-Tottenham star Steve Sedgley.

But the celebrities were forced to take a back seat on the fairways as Andrew Loudon took victory in the individual competition with an impressive 99 Stableford points from his three rounds, with The Nannies winning the team top with a total of 255 points over the three days.

David Barker, head of golf events at Sparks, said: “We had a fantastic trip to La Manga Club and it was the perfect way to begin our exciting 2014 calendar of events.

“The competition is always very popular with everyone that takes part and, with golfing facilities that are among the best in Europe, people know they are guaranteed a good time when they visit. We’d like to thank everyone involved at La Manga Club for making the event such a success.”

Since 1991, Sparks has raised more than £26m through fundraising initiatives to fund vital research into a range of conditions affecting babies, children and mums-to-be.

The children’s medical research charity is looking forward to one of its busiest summers ever of fundraising golf events and the Sparks La Manga Classic is the latest high-profile event that La Manga Club has staged this spring.

Three times the size of Monaco, the resort remains at the forefront of Europe’s top golf destinations with three first-class courses and recent notable recent highlights include hosting the first PGAs of Europe La Manga Club International Pro-Am, the 2014 Spanish Seniors Amateur International Championship and opening a new Leadbetter Golf Academy – the only one in mainland Spain.

The award-winning complex boasts unrivalled facilities as a sports and leisure destination including three 18-hole championship golf courses, a 28-court tennis centre and a 2,000sqm spa and fitness centre. It also offers the choice of a five-star hotel, four-star serviced apartments and townhouses and more than 20 bars and restaurants.
