Watson Wins Travelers in Playoff
All of the magic Bubba Watson lacked at the US Open returned to him at the Travelers Championship. The result? His second win at the tournament, his first victory of 2015, and a playoff win over Paul Casey on the second hole of sudden death.
Watson overcame a bogey on No. 17 to get in the playoff with Casey. After both men parred the 18th hole, Watson birdied it while Casey found sand on his second shot and overshot the green into the crowd on his third.
It’s Watson’s eighth PGA win, his first since last November, his first at the Travelers since his debut win here in 2010, and improves him to 5-1 in playoffs on the PGA Tour. His 2010 victory here was also in a playoff, then a three-way win over Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank.
Watson fired a final-round 67 to end up 16-under, birdying his first two holes and adding an eagle on 13.
Casey shot a 65 on the day to sprint back into the competition. He had a bogey on 15, but wrapped three birdies around it, and enjoyed an eagle 2 on No. 3.
Both men started the day trailing Brian Harman, who entered the final round 14-under, with Casey 11-under and Watson 12-under. Harman struggled from the get-go. He shot eight straight pars, then back-to-back bogeys. He was still at 1-over through 16 before making a push with two straight birdies, leaving him one shot out of the playoff.
