Brooks Koepka Maintains St. Jude’s Lead
American Brooks Koepka took over sole possession of first place with a 3-under 67 to reach 9-under through 36 holes at the FedEx St. Jude’s Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday.
Just 1-under at the turn, Koepka, who won the Waste Management Phoenix Open earlier this year, hit back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to maintain his lead.
Moving from 20th to second was American Austin Cook, who shot a day’s best 6-under 64 to reach 8-under through two rounds.
Cook strung together five birdies in six holes, including four straight on the back nine. Just 24, Cook finished 13th here a year ago and tied for second at the Shell Houston Open in April.
Twenty-nine players are within six shots of the lead at the halfway point, including Phil Mickelson, who shot a 1-under 69 and is 3-under for the tournament, tied for 22nd.
Last year’s champion, Ben Crane, shot a 70 and is tied for 15th at 4-under.
Two other men tied Cook for the best score of the day with 64s. Scotland’s Russell Knox moved up to a tie for fourth with his at 6-under, and Kevin Chappell jumped from 73rd to a tie for 11th at 5-under.
