Wells Fargo Championship Preview
Three of the top 5 players in the world gather at Quail Hollow this week for the Wells Fargo Championship, which has been played there since 2003. The course is most famous for its final three holes, nicknamed the “Green Mile” and often considered the toughest closing trio on the PGA Tour.
No. 1 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 Henrik Stenson and No. 5 Jim Furyk are all on hand along, with J.B. Holmes, the defending champion. Furyk was the runner-up here a year ago, and McIlroy is tied for the record for the lowest single round in tournament history, a 62 in 2010.
This is one of McIlroy’s homes away from home, having won his first PGA title here and has three other Top 10 finishes, including a playoff defeat to red-hot Rickie Fowler in 2012.
Furyk, Holmes, and Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson are paired together on the first two days, starting on the 10th hole at 8 a.m. local.
Other impressive opening trios include the 1:10 p.m. front nine group of Adam Scott, Stenson, and Kevin Kisner; and the 1:20 p.m. group of McIlroy, Patrick Reed, and Ben Martin.
