Kirk Beams Up Leaderboard at Players Championship
Chris Kirk fired three straight birdies on the back nine to take a 1-stroke lead into the final round of the Players Championship with his 4-under 68 on Saturday.
It’s not the most comforting lead in the world – some 24 players are within four strokes of the lead, among them the best of all – No. 1 Rory McIlroy.
Day 2 co-leader Kevin Na looked in great shape to stay in that position when he dropped his drive within six feet of the hole on the No. 17 Island Green, but missed the birdie putt, then three-putted for a double bogey on 18 that saw him finish at even par and fall into a tie for fifth.
Three players – Kevin Kisner, Ben Martin, Bill Haas – are tied for second at 9-under, followed by Na, Day 2 co-leader Jerry Kelly, Justin Thomas, Sergio Garcia, Scott Brown, and David Hearn at 8-under. Thomas, a 22-year-old rookie, fired 10 birdies on the round, a new Stadium Course record.
Tiger Woods set the wrong type of career mark on Saturday, hitting two double-bogeys on par-5s in the same round, the first time that has happened in his career.
