Field Set for WGC-Cadillac Match Play
The novelty of the WGC-Cadillac Championships returns next week, and the field of 64 contenders is set, with players needing to confirm their commitments by Friday.
There are two new facets of the tournament – its venue, the TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, and a new format, which includes 16 different groups over the first three days playing in round-robin format.
Groups of four will play round-robin on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with the player with the best record advancing to a Round of 16 for single-elimination matches on Saturday.
In prior years, the entire tournament was a single elimination match play event. In order to balance the groups, players will be divided into four categories based on ranking: 1-16, 17-32; 33-48; 49-64. This coming Monday, one player from each pool will be drawn at random to comprise the 16 groups.
The round of 16 and quarterfinals will be Saturday, with the semifinals and finals on Sunday, meaning the final four men will pack in seven rounds over five days.
The past three champions – Jason Day, Matt Kuchar, and Hunter Mahan, are all in the field.
