Nineteen-year-old Chinese golfer Li Hao-Tong just about stole the spotlight at the Shenzhen International on Sunday, but Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat’s breathtkaking finish led to a win in a playoff for the title.
In winning his second European Tour title, Aphibarnrat eagled hole No. 17 thanks to an 18-foot putt, then birdied the extra hole to knock off the teenage sensation.
“Special thanks to my caddie, he was always pushing me,” Aphibarnat said. “When we were two behind on the last two holes he said you have not lost, we have not signed the scorecard yet and he was completely right and I just got the job done.
The tournament couldn’t have been much closer, as 10 players finished within two strokes of the lead and 24 within five strokes of it. Sunady was Aphibarnrat’s first day shooting higher than a 69, and he was 2-over after 16 holes before firing the eagle 3 on No. 17, the same hole he double bogeyed on Saturday.
After ineffectual rounds of 71 and 73 to start the tournament, Hao-Tong fired a 65 on Saturday and a 67 on Sunday to come blazing back. Ranked 194th in the world, the teenager won’t turn 20 until the beginning of August. He previously has three wins on the PGA Tour China.
PGA star Bubba Watson finished a distant 29th, although his fourth-round 65 was the best score on Sunday.
