Hansen Leader at Rain-Blown Madeira
Poor weather was the main story for the second straight day at the Madeira Islands Open in Portugual, but Dane Joachim Hansen did his best to help propel the story line.
Of the two-thirds of players able to complete their first round on Friday, Hansen was the best, with a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead. Ranked 586th in the world, Hansen shot a bogey-free round to take the slight lead over five other players.
Play Thursday never began at all and the decision was made Friday to cut the tournament down to 54 holes due to rain and flooded greens. Play was suspended for many players again on Friday, with the first round hopefully set to conclude on Saturday around 8 a.m. locally.
This is the second straight year that poor weather has hampered the tournament. The 2014 tournament was cut down to 36 holes.
S.S.P. Chowrasia, the only player ranked in the Race to Dubai Top 60 in the field, is currently tied for 56th after shooting a 1-over 73 on Friday.
