Young Gun Otaegui Takes Lead at Tshwane
When you’ve got Jose Maria Olazabal mentoring you, you know you must have some real talent.
Spain’s Adrian Otaegui showed plenty of that talent on Friday at the Tshwane Open in South Africa, firing a 62 to drop to 11-under over the first 36 holes, taking a two-stroke lead into Saturday.
The 22-year-old played his junior golf in the same town where Olazabal was raised. He was in sight of a 59 after birdying No. 16 on Friday, but struck a par and a bogey to finish the day.
Otaegui shot a 67 on Day One. He came into the tournament ranked 403rd in the world. His only two bogeys through the first 36 holes have both come on No. 18.
He has a two-stroke lead over South Africa’s Merrick Bremner, who followed up his opening-round 65 with a 66 on Friday. Moving up to third was Trevor Fisher Junior, winner of last week’s Africa Open.
Day One leader Morten Orum Madsen torpedoed his spot at the top by following up his Thursday 63 with a Friday 72. Madsen had two double bogeys in his first four holes.
