Davis Takes 1-Stroke Lead at Valspar
Brian Davis drilled a 25-foot putt on No. 9 to take a one-stroke lead at the conclusion of the first round of the Valspar Championship Tuesday in Palm Harbor, Florida.
Davis was as surprising a leader as anyone after one day. In his previous four starts this year, he’s missed two cuts, withdrawn after two rounds, and finished 59th at the Honda Classic.
Davis struggled to back-to-back bogeys on 7 and 8, but recorded five birdies between No. 9 and 15 to more than make up for it.
Americans Sean O’Hair and Ricky Barnes are tied for second after shooting 5-under 66s.
World No. 3 Henrik Stenson is one of six players tied for third at 4-under. Stenson had a burst of four birdies in six holes to account for his score.
Defending tournament champion John Senden got off to a staggering start, struggling to a 3-over 74. He’s not alone there, Justin Rose also hit a 3-over and Honda Classic champion Padraig Harrington shot a 5-over 76.
