While they aren’t in the biggest tournament of the week, there’s still plenty to brag about for winning the Africa Open – notably Race to Dubai points and world rankings.

Ireland’s Kevin Phelan and the UK’s Matt Ford were tied for first after the initial 18 holes with a pair of dueling 5-under 67s on Thursday at East Longon, easern Cape, South Africa.

Phelan, in the mix at No. 50 in the current Race to Dubai standings, was nearly perfect, suffering only a bogey on No. 11 but countering it with three straight birdies from No. 5 to No. 7.

Ford played a bogey-free round and got hot late with birdies on 15, 16, and 18 to forge the tie at the top.
