John Daly Turns back the clock with 65
Up until Thursday morning, John Daly’s only headline of the week was that his current girlfriend was being sued by his ex-wife for whatever in the world marital sabotage is.
On Thursday in beautiful Southern California, Daly partied like it was in 2005. His 7-under 65 at the Monterrey Course put him one stroke back of the lead with his best round in a decade.
“It’s just great to be able to come out here and not have to survive the weather and survive the golf course,” he said. “But we’ll just see what happens.”
Pebble Beach has long been an eyesore for Daly. He finished 20th here during his rookie season, then missed 10 straight cuts.
He caught the attention of the gallery early, with birdies on 2, 4, 5, and 7 to reach the turn at 4-under.
He added three more birdies without missing a beat to sit a stroke off the overall lead.
The 48-year-old Daly has not finished in the Top 10 of a PGA event since July of 2011 when he took ninth at the RBC Canadian Open.
