Bernd Notice: Wiesberger Rises at Maybank
Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger fired a 63 on Saturday to leap into the lead at the Maybank Malaysian Open by two strokes heading into the final round.
Wiesberger rifled off five straight birdies to start the round, and finished it with three more in a row to rise to 17-under through 54 holes. He leads Alejandro Canizares by two strokes. Canizares, the Day Two co-leader, shot a 4-under 68.
Lee Westwood, who had enjoyed at least a share of the lead through the first two days, dropped into a tie for third after his worst score of the tournament, a 3-under 69 dropped him three strokes out of the lead.
Amazingly, Wiesberger’s 62 wasn’t even the best round of the day, that honor went to India’s Anirban Lahiri, who scorched the course with a 10-under 62 after shooting 70 and 72 on his first two days. Lahiri shot a 30 on the front nine and made 10 birdies in all to move into fifth at 12-under.
