Americans Nicholas and Michael (no relation) Thompson fired a 64 and 65, respectively, to take the top two spots on the leaderboard after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Thursday.

A two-hour fog delay saw 42 players unable to complete their first rounds and also saw Tiger Woods withdraw from the tournament altogether, complaining of lower back pain after 11 holes.

Dustin Johnson, playing his first tournament since August, was at 2-over through 17 holes, leaving him tied for 113th.

The 32-year-old Nicholas Thompson is after his first career PGA win, and has finished in the Top 10 just once in the past five years. He looked nothing like that player on Thursday, firing an eagle on No. 1, and putting together three straight birdies following his only bogey of the round to fire a 64.

Michael Thompson, who finished tied for second at the 2012 US Open, racked up eight birdies and a single bogey for his 65.

Brooks Koepka, winner of last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, is one of two players tied at 6-under. Koepka enjoyed an eagle on No. 14 to get him up the leaderboard.

Robert Allenby, the Australian who has come under fire of late for his tale of a late-night mugging in Honolulu last month, had his best round since then, a 2-under 70 to tie him for 29th place.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson struggled through three bogeys in five holes and is 1-over through 15 holes.
