Westwood, McDowell atop Malaysian Open Board
Lee Westwood started off the 2015 Maybank Malaysian Open right where he finished in 2014 – at the top.
The defending champion is tied with Graeme McDowell at 6-under after the first day of competition in Kuala Lumpur.
Just 2-under at the turn, Westwood fired four birdies in a six-hole span on the back nine. He also won this event in 1997.
McDowell bogeyed the same hole as Westwood – No. 6 – but had four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back.
Unlike previous starts early in the Euro Tour season, Malaysia has not been kind to a majority of the field, only 38 players were under par after 18 holes
Current Race to Dubai money leader Danny Willett retired from the event after 12 holes due to an unspecified back injury. Willett bogeyed three of his first six on Thursday, and another bogey on No. 12 saw him leave the course.
