Ryan Palmer rocketed up the leaderboard at the second round of the Humana Challenge on Friday, firing an 11-under 61 to move within three shots of the lead held by Matt Kuchar.

Palmer reached 10-under through 10 holes, which meant he had to go 3-under on the final eight to get to 59, the all-time record. He couldn’t sustain the momentum, however, bogeying the next two holes.

“Walking off 10, after I got to 10 under, I was staying calm, trying not to think about anything, just trying to keep my momentum going, my pace with my walk,” Palmer said. “It’s hard not to think about it.”

Kuchar fired a 64 after his opening-round 65 to reach 15-under, one stroke ahead of Michael Putnam and Bill Haas. Kuchar fired a 31 on the back nine and eagled No. 4.

Putnam fired a 67 to slide one back, while Haas scored a 63, blitzing his way to seven straight birdies between No. 2 and 8.

Twenty-one players are at least 10 strokes under par after two rounds, which means it’s pretty much anyone’s game halfway through the tournament.

Phil Mickelson bounced back from his opening round 71 to fire a 6-under 66 to drop to 7-under and a tie for 36, eight strokes off the lead. Mickelson was in position to rise even higher – at 6-under through 12 holes, but he had two bogeys over the final four.
