Martin Kaymer Takes Command at Abu Dhabi
While 2014 might have been the year of Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer won a Major as well, and brought a ton of swagger to the third round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Saturday, firing a 65 to reach 20-under, racing out to a 6-stroke lead over his closest competitor.
McIlroy, who had closed within 2 strokes of Kaymer after Friday, shot a 1-under 71, dropping eight strokes back and down to a tie for fifth.
Thomas Pieters maintained his second-place position, but fell from one stroke off the lead to six with his 2-under 70.
For a second straight round, Kaymer did not hit a single bogey. Through 54 holes, he has 22 birdies and only two bogeys.
A day after shooting 5-under including his first career ace on the front nine, McIlroy was at even par at the turn and was still there through 14 before a birdie got him just under par for the round.
