Simpson, Casey Lead Sony Open with Matching 62s
Webb Simpson, knowing he’ll be forced to give up his belly putter next year, decided to try the shorter stick out for the first time on Thursday at the Sony Open in Honolulu.
He now wishes he had tried it a little sooner.
Simpson birdied 8 of his final 10 holes to record an 8-under 62, tying him for the Day 1 lead with Paul Casey.
It was Casey’s first Sony Open in a decade. He’s relinquished his Euro Tour card this year to concentrate more on the PGA Tour and a new child.
The friendly course saw 69 of the field’s 144 players shoot at least one stroke under par.
A full 21 players are within five strokes of the lead, including defending champion Jimmy Walker, tied for 12th at 4-under.
