South African Open Championship Preview
The 2015 European Tour resumes beginning Thursday with Ernie Els playing host and ambassador for the 104th South African Open Championship, played at Glendower Golf Club in Ekurhuleni.
In addition to Els, the big draw for the tournament is Charl Schwartzel, currently ranked No. 32 in the world.
Els is a five-time winner of the event, most recently in 2011 when he shot a staggering 25-under, although that score wasn’t official because heavy rains made No. 4 unplayable for two rounds and all players received a par.
Els does have the official record as well, a 24-under 264 in 2007, his fourth win.
Other notable South Africans int he field include George Coetzee and Branden Grace. Defending champion Morten Orum Madsen is also on hand. Last year’s victory was the first on tour for the 26-year-old Madsen.
The course at Glendower opened in 1937. It is a 6,914-yard, par-72 course.
