Stenson Repeats as DP Champion

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson finished 2014 just like he had 2013 – winner of the final tournament of the season, and that much richer for it.

Stenson’s 70 on Sunday was his worst round of the tournament, but it was enough to hold off the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose and secure the DP World Tour Championship held in Dubai, UAE.

Stenson finished 16 under, two strokes ahead of McIlroy, Rose, and Victor Dubuisson. McIlroy, No. 1 in the world and the overall Race to Dubai winner, shot a 4-under 68, as did Dubuission.

Rose shot a 3-under 69 to finish third in the final rankings. Dubuission ended up fifth.

Stenson finally lost his streak without a bogey at 39 when he hit a 5 on No. 8, and things got dicey when he double bogeyed No. 11.

McIlroy tied Stenson for the lead with birdies on 14 and 15, and Rose did likewise with three in a row on 14, 15, and 16.

Stenson responded to the pressure in style, recording birdies on 17 and 18 while neither of his competitors could manage more than a par.

Day Three co-leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello dropped like a rock with a 3-over 75 to finish tied for ninth at 11-under.  Cabrera-Bello completed a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde weekend, shooting a combined 4-over on Days 1 and 4, and 15-under on Days 2 and 3.

The 2015 season commences on December 4 with the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa.
