Wyndham Championship Last Chance for FedEx Cup Hopefuls
It will be hard to even come close to the fervor of last week’s PGA Championship, but the Wyndham has an ace up its sleeve – players who do well have the chance to either qualify or move up the ladder in the upcoming FedExCup playoffs.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the former Greensboro Open has 500 FedExCup points awaiting the winner, not to mention a check for $954,000. Played at the Sedgefield Country Club since 2008, recent winners have been no slouches, including the likes of Sergio Garcia and Brandt Snedeker.
Snedeker is the leading favorite to win this time around, installed as a 14-to-1 favorite, just ahead of Patrick Reed, the defending champion, who is 16-to-1.
The course is a par-71, 7,071-yard beauty that features just two par-5s.The toughest hole on the course is the par-4, 32-yard No. 6, which introduces water for the first time in the form of a narrow creek that lies dangerously close to where most tee shots land.
The first group of heavyweights tees off at 12:45 p.m. when South Africa’s Ernie Els and Canada’s Mike Weir join the US’ Charles Howell III on the front nine.
Co-favorites Reed and Brandt Snedeker are paired together with Webb Simpson, also a past champion, at 12:55 p.m.
