TESTED: Cobra BioCell driver reviewed

28 July 2014, Posted by , , , 0

In our opinion, Cobra are making some of the best-looking clubs in the market right now – which you probably need to do when Rickie Flower and Ian Poulter are your main Tour representatives.

The BioCell we tested is in the new all black livery and it looks fantastic. The crown is really nice: the Cobra logo serves as a simple alignment aid while the scientific cell-style paint job is subtle, yet distinctive.

The deep, black face has a mix of dark grey and white groves/lines, which make it really easy to tee up with the ball smack in the middle of the face.

In all, there are five color options: Blue Aster, Barbados Red, Vibrant orange, Silver and new to the line up – Black.

THE TECHY BIT (what Cobra say)
BIOCELL CROWN CELL WEIGHTING
New internal BiO Cells remove weight from the crown and position it low and back in the head to deliver a lower CG and higher MOI for greater distance and accuracy.

FORGED E9™ BIO CELL FACE
New BiO CELL pockets combined with E9 Face technology removes weight from the face to deliver a larger effective Sweet Zone® with faster ball speeds for longer and straighter drives – especially on off-center hits.

MYFLY8 WITH SMARTPAD™ TECHNOLOGY
There are eight adjustable loft settings to maximize distance and manage trajectory for any course condition and any swing.
These are: 9.0°/9.5°/9.5°Draw/10.5°/10.5°Draw /11.5°/11.5°Draw/12.0°

WHAT WE FOUND
Boom! When you catch a ball out of the middle of this driver it sounds like Concorde going supersonic – the air literally cracks! It’s a phenomenal sound, and while it may not be for purists – we loved it!!

The BioCell sits beautifully at address and the 460cc head, headshape and black crown inspire confidence. It looks like a club you want to hit. It feels like a club you want to hit. And it is a joy to hit.

Even on a standard 9.5 degree setting, ball flight was high and long with the stiff Project X shaft (62g). Using the torque wrench to change to a 10.5degree Draw setting soon solved the slight fade we encountered at the lower loft and the MYFLY8 Smartpad is really, really, simple to use.
For anyone out there who wants simple and easy adjustability – here it is in spades.

Being custom fit for a driver is really sensible and we’d always recommend this before purchase. We weren’t able to do that this time and it would have been good to see the difference between the stiff and regular flexes, although our tester has been custom fit with a Project X 6.0 stiff shaft before.

This is a great driver and well worth investigating if you’re hunting a new ‘big dog’.
