Can Rory Mcilroy avoid his 2nd Round Jinx?
Rory McIlroy heads into the 2nd round of the Open Championship on top of the leaderboard, but can he put a stop to his Friday blowout rounds?
After a stellar round of 66, that gives him a one stroke led over Matteo Manassero. His bogey free round included three birdies on the front nine, and three birdies on the back nine, and looked effortless from start to finish. This is nothing new for the fans who have followed him this year. He has opened with rounds of 63 three times this year, and even last week he shot an opening round of 64. However on all four occasions, Friday was to be a cruel one.
At last weeks Scottish Open he followed a 64 with a 78, which was the same second day score as he had when he opened with a 63 at Memorial. His second round scores this year puts him at a staggering +9. Even before shooting his -6 first round, McIlroy acknowledged the problem “It’s just got into my head,” McIlroy told reporters . “I may be putting a bit too much pressure on myself going out on Fridays and trying to back up a score. I have no problem shooting a low one on Thursday. There should be no reason I have any problem shooting a low one on Friday.”
Interestingly Rory’s worst major finish since last year Open, was at the US Open where he finished Tied 23rd. Rory shot a second round 68, and that day happened to be Friday 13th!
