If it’s the Tshwane Open, there must be a South African in the lead.

This time it’s Louis De Jager, a three-time Sunshine Tour winner who is in his 10th professional season. After starting the round with five straight pars, De Jager birdied six of the last 12, including 16, 17 and 18 in a row to post a 7-under 64.

It is a very nice start,” he said. “It is nice to go off in the morning and then post a score like that.

“I am very happy with my game. I have been working quite hard on the game so it is nice to see some good results over the last few months.

“For us South Africans this is big, they are all important. Everybody knows without you having to even talk about it and everybody knows what they are playing for. So it just motivates you more.”

He leads the tournament by one stroke over the trio of Chile’s Felipe Aguilar, the US’ Julian Suri and South Africa’s Thomas Aiken.

Eleven of the 24 golfers who are at least 4-under par are South Africans.
