Kiradech Aphibarnrat Wins Perth Title
Kiradech Aphibarnrat won a dramatic 2 and 1 final over James Nittles to take the title at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth tournament on Sunday in Australia.
In classic golf fashion, Aphibranrat entered the tournament just a week ago and had not fired a single practice round at the Karrinyup Country Club before starting the tournament. He also barely made the 24-man match play final round, going four holes deep into a playoff on Saturday to take the last spot.
He played 35 more holes on Sunday. He defeated Ben Eccles, Yusaku Miyazato, Sean Crocker and Lucas Herbert in succession to reach the final against Nittles.
“It’s just been an awesome week,” Aphibarnrat said. “I don’t know how to explain but I’m so happy. I’m working so hard. The last few months I’ve been getting really close and finally I’ve done it. It means a lot. When you focus on something, you try this hard, then I kept finishing second and then I’m not giving up. I’m trying so hard until I get it. It’s really tough to get in the last 24. It’s been tough every single match that I play in. James is playing so good but he’s just unlucky at the end.”
The unique tournament format saw players in the final 24 facing off on a shortened match play course of the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 12th and 18th holes, along with a 90-yard shootout hole designed to break any remaining ties.
Nittles reached the final by defeating Nick Cullen, Diitrios Papadatos, Callan O’Reilly and Sam Horsfield.
