Bil Haas Leads Waste Management Open with 64
American Bill Haas jumped out to a quick two-stroke lead by firing a 7-under 64 on Thursday in Phoenix at the first round of the ultra-popular Waste Management Open on Thursday.
Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel, Chris Kirk, Bryson DeChambeau and Chesson Hadley are all tied for second, two strokes behind the leader with 5-under 66s.
Jon Rahm, the reigning European Tour Rookie of the Year and a graduate of nearby Arizona State University, is one of five players tied for third with 4-under 67s.
It looked like 2017 PGA Player of the Year Justin Thomas would be in the mix as well, but his double-bogey late in the round dropped him to a 3-under 68 on the day.
The smartest pairing of the day was matching former Sun Devils Rahm and Phil Mickelson together for the first two rounds.
Mickelson was a four-time All-American at Arizona State and won three NCAA individual titles.
“What am I going to say about Phil Mickelson that you guys don’t know?” Rahm said. “He’s one of the greatest guys out here. He’s always been a great friend and mentor to me. He’s helped me out on everything he’s been able to help me out on, in college and out of college.
Rahm won 11 tournaments at Arizona State and was a two-time All-American.
