Austin Cook Latest Leader at CareerBuilder Challenge
Is anyone actually out of contention at the CareerBuilder Challenge?
Through 54 holes, a staggering 51 players are at least 10 strokes under par. American Austin Cook leads the field at 19-under after firing an 8-under 64 on Saturday. Cook also shot 63 on Thursday.
Cook gave much of the credit to caddie Kip Henley.
“Kip said, ‘Let’s finish this like we did on the first day at the Nicklaus Course,’ ” said Cook. “We made a big par putt on 18 there, and he said, ‘Let’s just do the same thing. Let’s get this line right, and if you get the line right it’s going in.’ ”
He has a 1-stroke lead over Martin Pillear and Andrew Landry, and a 2-stroke lead over Scott Piercy and Jon Rahm.
Rahm is the obvious big-time threat given his dynamic 2017 season. Rah has shot 62-67-70 in the first three rounds.
“The course is firming up,” Rahm said. “I know if we have similar wind to today, if we shoot something under par, you’ll be way up there contesting it over the last few holes.”
Phil Mickelson missed the cut with a 74, finishing 4-under. He has not won a tournament since the 2013 Open Championship.
