Zach Johnson, Chris Kirk Tied Atop Sony Open Leaderboard
Zach Johnson and Chris Kirk each recorded seven birdies to share the lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Thursday.
Jordan Spieth made eight birdies, but an ugly quadruple bogey 8 on the 17th put him six strokes behind the co-leaders.
The duo have a 1-stroke lead over Kyle Stanley, Vaughn Taylor, Brian Harman and rookie Taylor Gooch, who easily has the best name on the tour this year.
The NCAA football championship result from last Monday carried over into the tournament as Justin Thomas won a bet with Kevin Kisner. Thomas went to Alabama, which defeated Kisner’s Georgia Bulldogs 26-23 in overtime last week. Kisner had to wear an Alabama jersey on the 17th hole.
Neither Kirk nor Johnson recorded a bogey in Round One. Justin Thomas, who became just the seventh man to shoot a 59 last year in the first round, shot a more modest 67 on Thursday.
Spieth was 2-under through 7 when he came unhinged with his quadruple bogey on No. 8. He did manage to bounced back and birdie the next two holes.
