American Reed Leads Justin Rose by 1 Stroke at Dubai
In a field full of international players, American Patrick Reed swung the biggest stick on Thursday at the first round of the DP Tour Championship in Dubai.
Reed, who fell from the top 10 to No. 17 in the world this year, opened his round with two birdies on the first two holes, then added five more on the back nine to shoot a 65.
Justin Rose, who won last week and will win the Race to Dubai title if he wins or finishes enough places ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, is tied for second after shooting a 6-under 66.
Rose was just 1-under at the turn but came alive with three birdies and an eagle 3 on the 572-yard par-5 No. 14. After a lackluster regular season, Rose has turned on the hottest stretch of his career. He’s currently No. 2 in the Race to Dubai standings and No. in the Official World Golf Rankings.
He’s tied for second with Australia Scott Hend who got on a remarkable birdie run on the back nine, shooting 5 in 6 holes between No. 10 and No. 15.
Six other players fired 5-under 67s including the UK’s Matthew Fitzpatrick. Overall leader Fleetwood has a disastrous first round as he tries to hold off Rose.
Fleetwood opened his round with a double-bogey six and ended up with a 1-over 73.
