Justin Thomas Ties for Tour Lead Through 36
Justin Thomas stepped out of Jordan Spieth’s shadow when he won the PGA Championship last month. Now he’s threatening to eclipse his long-time friend.
With a closing eagle on Friday, Thomas ended up with a 4-under 66 to share the lead at the TOUR Championship with Paul Casey and Webb Simpson. If Thomas can win the tournament this weekend, he’ll earn the $10 million bonus.
“It’s nice to have everything in my own hands and know that if I just take care of what I need to do, then it’s over,” Thomas said. “I want to win any week,” he said, “but it definitely would be a nice cap.”
He’s still got a ton of work to do. Any of the top 5 players in the latest FedEx Cup standings can win the $10 million by winning the tournament. That means Thomas’s reality is also that of Jon Rahm, who is fifth in the standings and just one stroke behind on the course.
FedEx third seed Dustin Johnson, ranked #1 in the world, has drifted to four strokes back.
“I just want to get within striking distance,” Johnson said. “If I can get it within three, I would be happy.”
