It turns out the fifth-place finish he racked up at the US Open last month wasn’t apex for Xander Schauffele, it was his jumping off point.

Schauffele, just 23 years old, won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday with a 3-foot birdie putt to defeat Robert Streb by a single stroke.

Schauffele finished with a 3-under 67 on Sunday to wind up at 14-under for the tournament. His fascinating story includes taking up golf solely because his soccer coaches wanted him to switch from offense to defense.

“The U.S. Open was a huge moment in my career,” Schauffele said. “It was one of the biggest stages, and for me to be calm and collected throughout the week and just kind of hang on and tie for fifth was huge for me mentally. It kind of gave me the confidence and allowed me to play to win this week.”

He earned a spot in The Open Championship in two weeks with the victory. He finished the tournament at 64-69-66-67 – 266.

It was a tournament of low scores, as 12 different players shot under 70 for all four rounds. The real disappointment of the tournament was that Davis Love III ran out of gas and shot a 75 on Sunday after sitting at 10-under through three rounds.
