Holmes, Stanley Lead Players Through 54
Despite not hitting a fairway on his final six holes, American J.B Holmes is tied for The Players Championship lead after 54 holes with Paul Stanley.
Holmes looked headed for the sewer early on, bogeying three of his first four holes then playing the rest of the day without a single bogey, drilling a tough save for par on No. 18 to card a 72 on the day.
The players trailing seem vastly more intriguing – including Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter who was thought to have lost his PGA Tour card earlier this year, only to realize it was a typo.
The wind wreaked havoc even more than the redesigned course.
“No lead can be big enough,” South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen said. “That’s what makes this golf course great. We’ve seen over the years great finishes around this golf course and horrible finishes. It’s a great three finishing holes, and you need to be on your game. You need to hit the ball well and … try not to do anything heroic when you have the lead.”
