John Daly Wins Champions Tourney, First Win Since 2004
Only John Daly could ride three straight bogeys to a title.
“It wasn’t pretty at the end,” Daly said, “but I got it done and that’s all that matters.”
It took him 21 tournaments in the Champions format to win a tournament. The Insperity Invitational was the place. It’s his first pro win since 200 when he won the Buick Invitational.
The 51-year-old Daly shot a final-round 69 to finish 14-under and win $322,500. He had an early eagle and led by two strokes after 15, then bogeyed the next three holes but still survived.
The Woodlands, located about 45 miles north of Houston, has long been a good course for Daly. He finished in the Top 10 four times playing the Shell Houston Open.
It was his 21st win as a professional. He has five on the PGA Tour, including the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship.
