Finally: Sergio Garcia Wins FIrst Major

No longer will Sergio Garcia be known as the best player to never win a Major. Now he’s just one of the guys.

After 70 fails at securing his first Major win, Garcia was the man of the hour Sunday afternoon at Augusta, defeating Justin Rose in a sudden-death playoff after rallying from two strokes down with six holes to go.

It was by no means a coincidence that Seve Ballesteros would have turned 60 on Sunday. Ballesteros was the first Spaniard to win the green jacket, followed by Jose Maria Olzabal, who Garcia was in constant communication with throughout the weekend.

He missed a seven-foot birdie that would have won the title in regulation that made plenty of fans recall earlier Major failings, but he quickly put those demons behind him.

It was obvious within the first two shots of that extra hole that it was Garcia’s tournament. Rose’s drive hit a tree while Garcia got within 12 feet of the hole. Rose settle for a bogey and Garcia didn’t try to play it safe, sinking a birdie putt for the title.

“Obviously, this is something I wanted to do for a long time,” García said, “but, you know, it never felt like a horror movie. It felt like a little bit of a drama, but obviously with a happy ending.”
