Brandon Stone Cruises to Dunhill Title

Twenty-three-year-old Brandon Stone picked up the second title of his burgeoning European Tour career, cruising to the Alfred Dunhill Championships title by seven strokes on Sunday in Malelane.

Both of his wins have come in his home country of South Africa, and both in 2016, although technically in different seasons.

His closing round 67 was the second-best round of the day and allowed him to finish 22-under, picking up a check for €190,200 and just as many Race to Dubai points in the process.

“To get this win before Christmas is obviously great but more importantly it gets me a good start on the Race to Dubai,” Stone said. “Obviously I finished 50th this year and I want to build on that and this is the perfect stepping stone to do that. On the front nine, I was tied for the lead at one stage. But I knew my game plan was to try to get maybe one or two under par through the turn and try to score on the back nine. That was the game plan I set myself on Thursday and that was the game plan I was going to stick to today.”

South Africa’s Richard Sterne finished second with a 15-under 273. He also shot a 67 on the day. No other player was within fewer than nine strokes of Stone.

Three-time winner Charl Schwartzel dropped back to a tie for fourth after a ragged 74 on Sunday. He was 3-under through 11 holes and 2-under through 14 before disaster struck in the form of a triple-bogey 8 on No. 15 followed by a double-bogey 3 on No. 16.
