Is Alex Noren The World’s Hottest Golfer?
Dustin Johnson just won PGA Player of the Year honors and Rory McIlroy took the FedEx Cup championship, but it’s Sweden’s Alex Noren who might just be the best player in the world right now.
Noren picked up his third tournament win in eight starts on Sunday, firing a final-round 69 to win the British Masters by two strokes over Bernd Wiesnberger. All this from a man who was ranked 110th in May after blowing the cut at the Irish Open. Since then he’s won the European Masters and Scottish Open, along with Sunday’s victory, and finished second in the Paul Lawrie Match Play and 11th in the Dunhill Links Championship.
His 18-under this past weekend included back-to-back rounds of 65 on Friday and Saturday. Lee Westwood was third at 15-under, no other player was within five strokes of the champion.
It’s very unreal,” said the 34-year-old, who only played two events in 2014 due to career-threatening wrist injuries. “I never thought about this going into this season.
“I just worked quite hard and sometimes you get lucky like this. You have to hit the right shots at the right times and I’m very happy.
“I believe in myself, but the big thing is you don’t have to play a perfect game. Just a few parts of your game need to be strong to get a win and I try to stay humble. I know golf is a tough game.”
